working on the master for Vriska’s wing frame. if I’d been able to cut it all out of one piece it would’ve been better but none of the foamcore I had on hand was large enough, and I don’t actually know where to buy any larger sizes. So it’s been taped together and cut down and that makes it kinda floppy.

It looks pretty cool though. And because I’m going to be molding and casting it I can just reinforce the “back” because that part won’t be molded— I’m going to be casting two “frames” per wing and gluing them together with the wing fabric sandwiched in between.

I’m still debating where the sparkle fiber will be going— along the top of the frame? the underside? in a channel carved along the side of the frame? If I do the channel carved alongside the frame I might need to purchase some more fiber. I’ve only got 180 feet of it. I know that sounds like a lot, but the design I came up with uses about 80 feet per wing.

So I’ve only got about 20 feet of wiggle room on these things, and you have to keep in mind that it’s not 180 feet straight of the fiber. It’s six 20 foot pieces and six 10 foot pieces.

Ah well, it’s time to get back to work!

Well Vriska’s wings are giving me trouble again. The wire dad so kindly bought won’t keep it’s shape so I need to find some other method of framing the wings.

Which while somewhat annoying also makes it so that I have to address some of the other problems in regards to how I was going to attach the organza to the frame. The original plan had been to sew a channel and feed the wire through it; this would have been exceptionally awkward when it came to the sharp “points” where the… um… sticky-outy parts in the middle of the wings came together.

can I really not think of a better word than “sticky-outy”?

…apparently not.

Moving on, I had considered using wonderflex to build two frames per wing and then sealing the fabric between them, but I don’t have enough wonderflex left over from Snakeman. I need to put in an order for it sooner or later— I have some armor projects I want to start in on— but in the meantime it means I need to try something else.

And then I remembered that I still have resin left over from when I was going to cast Phantom’s helmet crystal (I never did, as I ran out of time and wound up painting and using the master), and I just needed a little mold silicone. That was easily taken care of by heading over to PM Hobby.

So the current plan is to make a master frame using carved foamcore, then make a mold and pull some casts. I’ll probably wind up running wire through the resin just to make sure that there’s some form of solid core given how thin it’s going to be but I have high hopes for this.

I should probably make the horn molds at the same time, now that I’m thinking about it. Hmmm.

blue vriska??

Yeah so the paint mom got me for Christmas goes waaaaaaaay blue when photographed. Gonna have to find a different color…  maybe the one I actually asked for? Apparently they were out of stock or some such thing so she got the “next best”.

Anyways, post #3000 is my color test with my shitty temp horns. Gonna pick up some foam to make the real masters tomorrow.

Eyeliner makes for some pretty rad lipsticks.

things I should probably do today:

  • finish the rigging for Vriska’s wings. Because while proof of concept works I haven’t actually attached the motor
  • go to fabric land. I’m short some material for the hood (if I hadn’t screwed up Rose’s way back when I wouldn’t be but oh well)
  • BUCKLES. For Pi’s leg armor. Gonna be skinny enough to wear the costume again this year so dammit I am going to wear the costume this year!!
  • find red and blue acetate. I’m giving in and at least making Sollux’s glasses
  • buy a lego kit for mold-building

what’s probably going to happen:

  • get caught up in warcraft
  • realize it’s too late to go anywhere
  • spend the evening animating

alrightie, proof of concept is… sorta working now that it’s in metal. Problem is that the screws are too long (they’re only 1/4”!) and everything is wobbly. I’m thinking about putting in some washers to snug everything up.  The only other step I have before the flapping mechanism is complete is to connect the motor and power source. It’s going to stick out from my back a bit but I’m willing to accept that because flapping wings.  hahaha these wings are gonna be killer.

I also put in an order for 6 yards of turquoise mirror organza and 20 feet of sparkle fibre today. In a couple weeks I’ll be able to put together the actual wings! You have no idea how excited this makes me. Flapping sparkling wings! This is what I imagine having a childhood wish fulfilled feels like. Man, I should ask mom if I ever wanted sparkly wings as a kid.

As a side note, I chose the mirror organza over cellophane because of the LEDs that are going to be used to light the sparkle fibre. While heat/energy output of LEDs is low, it’s not nonexistent and I’d prefer it if my back didn’t go up in flames, no matter how cool it would look. The organza is a bit less melty ;p

working on my Vriska wings again

the proof of concept for the flapping system works!!

unfortunately, as it’s made out of tape, cardboard, and old rusty nails, it doesn’t stay together for much longer than about ten flaps. I’m off to go pick up some kids construction kits so I have some more sturdy pieces and joints.

Dad’s also suggested that I drill holes in Popsicle sticks (obviously he doesn’t remember my last misadventure with them), or pick up some plastic to cut and shape to the right sizes. Apparently he was thinking about this and nothing but this from 2am to 4am today.

He’s surprisingly gung-ho for this project. It almost makes me wish I’d told him about it sooner than last night at dinner.

!!

hahahahaha he just offered to go out and buy the bits and pieces for me!

Alrightie then. I do believe I am done this two day project of stupidity. At least until I get up in the morning and take a good long look at the embroidery again.

why do I always decide to embroider things at the last possible minute? seriously, it looks like shit when I do that, what with the rushing and the swearing at my machine.

oh well.

It looks pretty awesome right now, looking at it after a cumulative 12 hours of work. God Tier Rose for tomorrow fuck yeah.

(conveniently, I bought enough fabric to also do Vriska. and I may or may not have already started designing the motor rigging so I can have fluttery glowy wings. and by “or may not” I mean “there are three sheets of doodles”)
