Ok ok so
I watched Pacific Rim about a week or so ago. I enjoyed it, the fight scenes were cool and so were the Kaiju. Mako and the Wei Tang triplets were awesome, and so was Dr. Hermann. I’ve seen a lot of posts talking about the significance of PoC and people with disabilities in the film, and that’s wonderful. I love those posts and they’re really fun to read.
However, there was a point in the movie that utterly… disappointed me. Now, I haven’t looked at the fandom a lot on tumblr, so maybe someone has already made a post about this that I haven’t seen. Okay well that’s cool. I still want to talk about Hannibal Chau.
Mild spoilers/long post under the cut:
So I still have to go and write up all my head canons for just about every aspect of this movie, but one of my BIG HUGE THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT DUDES head canons is that that man is NOT Hannibal Chau.
Spoilers below.
My biggest point towards this head canon is that while Perlman makes the glib remark of “my favorite fictional historical figure and second favorite szechuan place in brooklyn”, at no point in the film does he ever actually state “I am Hannibal Chau”. Newt makes that assumption, and Perlman rolls with it.
Personally, I think the guy in charge of a Kaiju black market trade wouldn’t be stupid enough to put himself in a position where a Kaiju could eat him. That’s bad business. After the third watch through I came to the conclusion that Perlman’s character is the “Production Scheduler/Supervisor” for the retrieval of parts; he directs the minions on what is most likely to sell and therefore what is the most important to harvest for the biggest profits. They may have some interested buyers waiting in the wings for certain parts (such as Newt and his need for the secondary brain), but for the most part the Kaiju trade is probably based entirely on what sells for the biggest profit and making sure that is harvested and preserved first.
The balding guy that Newt first spoke to is the “production lead hand”— he’s kinda in charge in that he runs the “production teams”, and directs the minions on the ground towards what’s needed first. I don’t know why a lead hand would be working the cash counter, but maybe they’re just short staffed. Or all the Asians are too badass to deal with stupid ass customers. Yeah, that sounds good to me.
Anyways, when Mister Lead Hand/Cashier says “Good Luck,” to Newt upon opening the wall, I like to think it was a case of “He’s not here, but I’ll let you deal with my boss because it’ll be funny.”
Who is the actual Hannibal Chau, head of the Hong Kong Kaiju Black Market? I don’t know, but I kind of like the idea that he’s related to the Wei Tang Triplets somehow.
(Maybe that 4th brother Guillermo Del Toro originally wanted)

Daddy Issues! because supernatural wouldn’t be complete without them.
