DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE TNG REFERENCES
Like I get it, it’s fucking meticulous paying attention to what’s TNG, what’s TOS, and where everything fits on the ginormous offshoot timeline now that Nero’s fucked with it.
But ghfjghsjhjglhfdj, I don’t know, it irks me that they decided to tie in future Star Trek things with the TOS reboot. It’s not enough to go into detail really, it’s more of a niggling feeling that something’s off more than anything.
I knew they’d give the Klingon’s ridges, so we’ll just assume the event that caused them to develop occurred because of Nero, and move on. Or so I tell myself, because complaining about why they wouldn’t stick with the less iconic-looking image of them is just me being a huge stickler for accuracy.
blargh, this is why I should keep a bottle on my Trek feels. OTL I’d go on forever if I’m given a mic.
it is true that the daystrom institute existing didn’t make much sense…. i was just so happy for my series to be acknowledged (if even accidentally) that it didn’t matter to me lol. but yeah i can see why that gets annoying.
also what bugged me about the Klingons is their behavior – they were way too mellow. The Klingons I know would have been kind of offended at the idea of these puny humans suggesting they need help, and their military tactics were far more coordinated, rather than individualistic which is the basis of their honor-driven culture.
I spent a lot of time thinking about the Klingons in STiD. For one thing, it’s somewhat interesting that there are the forehead ridges, never mind all the piercings and the helmets and the squad tactics and the very techno-organic look of the D4-class ships.
I blame Nero for all of this, and here’s why. It isn’t just “oh, JJ is messing with the timeline.” Don’t forget, Nero and company were captured by the Klingons for years after their return to the past. That means the Klingons potentially had years of access to:
- Information about the future, including how the Empire dealt with the Augment virus
- Experience fighting a vastly technologically superior enemy, which may have had an effect on Klingon battle tactics
- Borg technology. Or at least, Borg equipment that had been reverse-engineered by the Tal’Shiar and used to convert the Nerada from a mining ship to H.R. Geiger’s wet dream.
Add in that Praxis already seems to have blown up – which wouldn’t have happened for another thirty-odd years – and we’re dealing with a very different Klingon Empire. I would wager that after capturing Nero and analyzing the future-tech (and then having Nero demolish gods know how many warships during his escape), the Empire utilized their newfound toys to rapidly rebuild their military, and Praxis met the same fate it did in the prime timeline. Too much dilithium mining done too quickly equals kablooey.
So the Empire has lost a major source of energy, has gone in a massively different direction in both infantry tactics and starship design, and is possibly more well-informed about the prime timeline than the Federation was (because they never got the Nerada’s data banks, and Spock Prime wouldn’t ever spill the beans). We definitely can’t expect them to be anything like TOS’s swarthy, mustachioed space pirates wearing gold lamé, let alone the TNG/DS9 bunch of honor-bound louts. Prime timeline Klingons honestly didn’t get their noses bloodied by a superior enemy until the Dominion War – having Nero stir things up so much with one damned ship probably made the Klingons realize that organized squad tactics were a very practical way to counter an unknown enemy. Plus, zipline deployment = rule of cool.
Also, while the Daystrom Institute wasn’t named until TNG, Dr. Daystrom himself showed up in TOS’s “The Ultimate Computer,” and therefore it’s perfectly probable that in the altered timeline the institute was founded while he was still alive.
