I re watched Thor (yeah, again) but I’m still puzzeled on the fact they made Laufey Loki’s father and not Fárbauti.
Why transforming his mother into his father and not mentioning his father at all? Or did I miss something?
(just randomly going through the thor tag and saw this so…)
I don’t know anything for sure, but my theory has a lot to do with the time frame where Laufey was introduced to the marvel comics (1965), and the idea that someone didn’t really do their fact checking. Loki is named with the matrionymic “Laufeyjarson”, which is notably rare (something like historically only 34 men ever did that? I dunno, quoting off a website here), whereas most use the patronymic.
So basically I figure it’s the 1960s. The person writing the scripts sees “Loki Laufeyjarson” and “Thor Odinson” and thinks “If Thor is named for his dad, then Loki must be too!” and makes Laufey a dude, forgets entirely about Fárbauti, and it goes to publishing without anyone who actually cared/knew anything about Norse mythology noticing.
And instead of retconning it for the movies like they retconned so much else, they decided to keep it in as a tie to the comics.
I totally over thought this when I first discovered that Marvel made Laufey male, in case you were wondering.
Thor and Loki arguing over whether or not Thor is worse than Volstagg.
God I love this game.
